5 Interior Design Tips

  1. Pick three main colors for each room
It can be all too easy to decorate a room one of two ways: one, focusing on a single color which can result in a match-matchy vibe; or two, throwing caution to the wind and combining only what you have available, which can feel disorienting and messy. If design already feels overwhelming, a simple tool is to choose three main colors for each room. This will designate themes and make assembling a room similar to filling in the blanks, resulting in a clean and pleasing room.

2. Work around the most important piece in the room

Choosing a focal point for each room makes beautiful design extremely accessible. Find one piece in your space, be it a lighting fixture, piece of furniture, or painting, and craft the rest of the room around it. This lends a cohesive look without overwhelming the senses. It's also a great way to let something truly beautiful and unique shine!

3. Mix Patterns & Textures, Old & New
Some of us prefer a loud and eclectic style, and our homes are the perfect medium to express our truest tastes. If you have some playfulness, a hint of the bohemian, or crave a place that is more invigorating than calming, mix it up! Mixing patterns and textures, and vintage and modern pieces, can help you encapsulate all of your inner paradoxes.

4. Paint or Wallpaper Bookcases
Bookcases are often functional pieces. They house our books, photos, and knick-knacks. Sometimes, a bookcase can look visually overwhelming, or just plain messy. A great way to personalize yours is by painting or wallpapering inside each shelf! This makes a standard bookcase transform into a wonderful statement piece. You can let your creativity fly with any color or pattern that piques your fancy.

5. Choose Lighting with Care
Lighting can make or break a mood, a party, AND a room! Whether you want your office brightly lit so you can see every detail of your current projects, or you're seeking a warm and relaxed atmosphere for your sitting room, lighting can help you achieve your aims. Many designers recommend having at least three sources of light in each room. Relying only on an overhead light or standing lamp doesn't cut it when it comes to designing a dynamic space. Variety is the spice of life, and the spice of design!
