13 Ways to Make the Most of Every Inch of Your Home

An issue many homeowners run into is how best to use the space available to them. Whether it’s an awkwardly shaped dining room, a too-small bedroom, or lack of storage space in the kitchen, there are a variety of ways to make your space feel larger, more functional, and more beautiful. 1. Switch Out Your Dining Room Table
Many of us have been trained to envision a dining room table as long and rectangular. But what to do when there isn’t enough space in your dining area? One option is to buy a table with a removable sleeve, which can expand or shrink according to your needs. Another option is to choose a circular table! Many times we can fit in quite a bit of people around one, and it leaves more room to navigate around the table. Dining rooms are the location of many milestone meals, and we want it to feel as spacious and luxurious as possible!


2.  Mount A Wall Desk
It can make a big difference in our productivity to have a dedicated work area in our homes. While we can can certainly complete work projects on the couch, we all know that distractions at home are a plenty, and having even a small refuge solely for those purposes can make a huge difference. If your space is limited, you can mount a fold down desk which can be folded back up when you’re not using it.

3. Play Houdini
Mirrors, the classic advice, can make room look so much larger. A fun trick is to place a mirror on the opposing wall of some beautiful art pieces or lighting. This will expand the  beauty of your room. The bigger the mirror, the better!

4. Choose Large Statement Pieces
Using a few large pieces in a small room is better than using many small pieces. It can help make a more cramped room feel grander, and prevents clutter. A large bed, with enough room for side tables, adds a touch of luxury to the dreariest of bedrooms. A large art piece in a living room can draw the eye to the vastness of a room.

5. Buy Translucent & Reflective Furnishings
Glass tables lessen the density of a crowded room and create a feeling of spaciousness and airiness. Whether a coffee table or side table, you can have the surface area you need without taking up too much of the visual field. Reflective pieces have a similar effect as mirrors, adding volume to a room from every angle!


6. Divider to Section Multi-Purpose Rooms
A divider creates the illusion of separate areas without taking up much space at all. It’s especially helpful in separating a bed from a sitting area, an office from a living room, and even setting up separate zones in a playroom! There are a vast variety of divider types, and if being used in a smaller space, utilize tip #5 by choosing a translucent one!

Letting storage go up the walls is an elegant way to make sure everything has its place, and that you have plenty of floor space! There are many shelves that can be installed up the wall and can store art, kitchen items, or toiletries.
Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves expand the feel of a room, drawing eyes upward, and are a classic way to display all your favorite books, picture frames, a knick knacks!
Another great way to utilize vertical space is with your house plants! Houseplants add so much to a room, from increased oxygen to beautiful greenery, and storing them in long hangers creates a beautiful dimension to any room.

8. Get Creative with Wall Colors
Many of us have been told time and time again to use light, neutral colors in small rooms. But adding a dark hued accent wall can make a room feel rich and expansive. A lot of times it can also take attention away from features in a room that you don’t love but haven’t gotten around to fixing. Whether it’s unflattering counters or an oddly textured ceiling, an attention-grabbing wall can cover for a myriad of design sins.

9. Double duty furniture
There are fabulous furniture pieces that serve so many purposes. Coffee tables and ottomans that double as storage containers, but look much better than your typical plastic containers. Certain bed frames have storage drawers, attached side tables, and even include lighting and electric outlets.

10. Remove Doors from Kitchen Cabinets
In a cramped kitchen, removing the cabinet doors opens up the space in a huge way, and creates another design opportunity. Showing off your favorite dishes, and their color coordination, looks modern and chic. You can get creative with contact paper, to add a burst of color along the shelving, and brighten up an otherwise dark area.

11. Paint Patterns or Add Wallpaper
Want to go the extra mile with your accent wall? Painting horizontal stripes can lengthen the look of a room. Have a room with neutral furniture? Add a splash of personality with an accent wall of wallpaper! It will instantly elevate the look of a room, and is a wonderful way to decorate a wall without adding art pieces.

12. Hang Curtains Up to the Ceiling
Always wanted higher ceilings? You can create the illusion of them by hanging curtains above your window, with the curtain rod secured all the way up to the edge of the ceiling. This will make your room look grand, sweeping, and enhances the natural light from your window.

13. Lighting Statement Piece
If you want to avoid clutter but still need something special in a room, invest in a cool and trendy lighting piece. It can serve as the POP in a room, adding elegance and using none of your precious floor and wall space!
